“I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. suddenly you are five years old again. you can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” -bill bryson

i’ve been in iceland for 2 weeks now and it’s been a whirlwind of adventure. from attempting to read the street signs, trying different food, taking in the views, and various activities- everything has been a new experience so far. 2 weeks of things is a lot to cover, but figured I would highlight my top 10 suggestions for things to do in iceland if anyone ever finds themselves here. my time isn’t halfway over yet so I know there’s things I will be adding to the list, but for now these have been my favorite things! i’ve also attached some pictures below you can refer to in order to see some of the places I am talking about 🙂

1. try “icelandic pizza” served with jam; this pizza is topped with a variety of cheeses, always including bleu cheese and served with red currant jam. it might sound strange to put jam on your pizza, but I promise it’s a hit.

2. go glaicer hiking, or visit a glacier lagoon. it’s pretty unreal to hike on top of a giant glacier – make sure you pack extra snacks and wear extra layers because it can get cold up there.

3.  explore reykjavik. iceland is more known for it’s stunning landscapes but the city located near the main airport is full of various museums and cute little shops. reykjavik roasters is a great local coffee shop to stop in and grab a latte to escape the cold for a little while.

4. snorkeling between two tectonic plates. need I say more? definitely a once in a lifetime type of activity you can do while here.

5. go swimming in a hot spring! an excuse to pack your bathing suit even though the temperature outside isn’t made for it.

6. roadtripping to chase some waterfalls. iceland is full of beautiful waterfalls and some you don’t need to hike hours to access, they are located right off the road. rent a car, or van, and see what all you can see!

7. caving. crawling through icelandic caves was another surreal experience. in the summer months you can see icicles melting within the caves which is pretty cool. again, make sure you’re wearing lots of layers.

8. black sand beaches. not your typical beach vacation, but if you’re lucky and it’s a sunny day you can take your shoes off and feel the sunshine under your feet. also looks really cool for pictures!

9. take the time to learn about the elves here. I won’t go into detail on this because you have to look it up yourself! try to scout out some elves homes while you’re here.

10. take a hike! there are so many stunning trails for all experience levels. make sure you have ankle boots and thick socks so your feet stay dry and protected. the views are beautiful and well worth the uphills. 🙂
